WHALE OF A TIME! WITH BLASTCOM & STRAALTECHNIEK UK

Whale Tankers Ltd established in 1969 are now one of the largest manufacturers of liquid waste vacuum tankers and jetting equipment in Europe and are constantly looking at ways of improving their operational and manufacturing efficiencies.

One such process efficiency was the surface preparation of a range of components that make up the finished tankers prior to their painting operation.

For many years Whale utilised a manual blasting process but as the success of their products increased the demand for them they realised that the manual process although very good was time consuming and creating a production bottleneck.

Along with other major expansion plans at Whale, Manufacturing Manager Matt Broadhurst (pictured) was charged with finding a solution to this issue and turned to a local Surface Preparation company Blastcom UK who along with their sister company Straaltechniek UK began an investigation to speed up this process.

Over a period of several months and arranged visits to customers utilising automatic blasting machines Matt, along with Jay Dorling a Director of both Blastcom & Straaltechniek began to formulate the best and most cost effective solution.

It was decided that the majority of the bottle neck was manually blasting smaller components of different shapes and thicknesses and by utilising one of Straaltechniek’s automatic ‘Y’ Track Hanger Blast Machines with High Performance Long Life Tungsten Carbide variable  speed blast wheels would significantly speed up the operation.

After successful  trials Whale Tankers ordered through Blastcom a new Straaltechniek HK12/18-3 Hook Blast Machine. Matt went on to say that ‘this automatic machine has revolutionised our blasting strategy and the removal of the smaller parts from the manual blast room has allowed our operative to concentrate more on the larger tanks which has significantly improved the quality and output of this part of the process’.

Another win for Whale is the locality of the support from Blastcom based in the West Midlands who along with Straaltechniek as the manufacturers of the machine based in Sheffield are always readily available for advice, service & spares support.

THE NEXT LEVEL!

Straaltechniek UK Revolutionises Tension Control Bolts Blasting Process

TCB (Tension Control Bolts) manufacturers of Tension Control Bolts and the innovative Shear Wrench System who supply the worlds largest construction projects such as the recently renovated Forth Bridge, needed help to improve the productivity of their blasting production process and improve surface profile quality prior to downstream processes.

After consultation with a number of blast equipment manufacturers they decided to commission Straaltechniek UK. Straaltechniek demonstrated that the latest 400 Litre capacity Rubber Belt Batch Barrel Blast Machine with High Performance Long Life Blast Wheel technology coupled with optimised abrasive selection could significantly increase productivity and achieve the surface profile quality TCB required.

Ray Macera (General Manager) at TCB explained ‘From our initial meeting with Straaltechniek their approach and interest in our challenges stood out from the crowd. The professionalism of their presentation and understanding of our requirements, alongside Quality,Cost and Delivery commitments, gave us the confidence to make our final decision.

Straaltechniek UK’s Service Division reviewed our existing equipment and rapidly identified where there were opportunities for improvement with the current blasting operation. The adjustments and recommendations on our existing machine coupled with the prospective equipment performance enhancements on their new machine validated the decision to choose Straaltechniek as a strategic working partner’

Ray went on to say ‘after a successful delivery, installation and commissioning process the performance of the Straaltechniek machine measured against our existing equipment has been quite significant with blast times reduced by 50%. Based on this we have ordered two High Performance Long Life blast wheels to be retrofitted as part of an Equipment Modernisation Programme on our existing machine. This will ensure that we have matched capacity on both Blast machines to ensure they can operate in tandem. This will result in a win, win situation protecting the future capacity of TCB’s production process’

Jay Dorling (Sales Director) at Straaltechniek commented ‘there were so many facets of our operation which ‘ticked’ all the boxes at TCB. New and latest design of machine’s, High Performance Long Life Blast Wheels, years of experience and knowledge within the industry, service and spares back up and Equipment Modernisation Programmes (EMP) all contributed to what has been a highly successful partnership’

Straaltechniek UK Ltd refurbish & install roller conveyor shot blaster for Hall & Pickles

For two centuries Hall & Pickles have supplied Steel throughout the UK and today they hold a comprehensive range of general steel and strip mill products with full stock coverage of popular sizes in all major product groups. Through seven generations of the Hall family, Hall & Pickles has evolved through consistent investment and innovation into the market leader they are today.

This year, Hall & Pickles consistent investment has continued and included the requirement to add a new roller conveyor shot blast machine at their Monkhouse & Brown site in Gateshead. By providing fantastic customer service as well as a quality product being supplied the site has thrived and received a high demand by their customers which triggered a requirement to increase production by investing in a 2nd roller conveyor shot blast machine.

As a valued customer of Straaltechniek UK, who have been servicing and supplying spares on the existing shot blast machine Monkhouse & Brown made contact with them and invited James Lees (UK Sales Manager, Straaltechniek UK) to visit the site in Gateshead and meet with Stephen Paul (Group Operations Director) to discuss the potential for supplying a machine suitable for their production requirements.

The timing was perfect as Straaltechniek UK had recently acquired a 2nd hand machine very similar to the one currently being used at Monkhouse & Brown and after an inspection of the machine an offer was made by quotation to refurbish the equipment, supply and install on site mirroring the existing process and therefore enabling productivity to double.

An order was placed and the machine was refurbished at Straaltechniek UK’s workshop in Sheffield. The machine has since been delivered, installed and is in full production.

 Stephen Paul, Group Operations Director at Hall and Pickles said;

“Investing in a high quality and reliable product has always been vital to Hall and Pickles to ensure our customers receive their products on time and shot blasted to the highest possible standard, and adding this second machine will no doubt prove to be a long term investment that will continue to service our customers in the same way as our existing machine”

Straaltechniek UK Ltd refurbishment of old shot blaster tumbler to look as good as new

Straaltechniek Ltd has many years experience within the surface preparation industry both in the manufacture and design of New Centrifugal wheel, air blasting, shot peening and dust extraction machines. As well as new blast machines they can offer all aspects of equipment modernisation to improve the efficiency of existing blast equipment supplied to many industries worldwide.

For many years Straaltechniek UK Ltd have been providing customers with surface preparation services including machine maintenance, spare parts, servicing, and equipment modernisation throughout the UK and have recently refurbished one an old, and tired looking 50ltr Tumble Shot Blast machines for one of their customers.

The rubber belt Tumblast machine, has served it’s purpose as an integral part of a surface preparation process, shot blasting components in batches ready to move onto the next required treatment process.

As these types of machines age they become more difficult to maintain as they are constantly blasting throughout shifts turning over batch after batch of components and so the customer contacted Straaltechniek UK for a quotation to refurbish their machine.

Straaltechniek UK offered to do a full inspection by their experienced engineers and a quotation followed which was accepted and an order was placed.

The Shot Blast machine was de-commissioned and carefully dismantled at customer premises and returned to Straaltechniek UK’s workshop in Sheffield, South Yorkshire where it was completely stripped down and refurbished ready for testing which was completed prior to being given a new paint job to look as good as new.

The machine has since been delivered, installed in a new location on site at the customer’s request, recommissioned and is back in full production doing what it does best.

 James Lees, UK Sales Manager at Straaltechniek UK said;

“This is one of many projects we have worked on for our customers this year and it is always great to see an old machine restored to its former glory”.

Straaltechniek UK bring shot blaster back to life for Altrad Belle

As an major supplier worldwide in the Building and Construction markets, Altrad Belle are No1 established manufacturer of an extensive range of lightweight construction equipment from Cement mixers, Compactors, Wheelbarrows, just to name a few.

Over the past few years Straaltechniek UK Ltd have been providing Altrad Belle with surface preparation services including spare parts, servicing, and equipment modernisation to their existing hook monorail shot blaster that plays an integral part in the finishing process preparing components for the quality paint job that can be seen on Altrad Belle’s equipment and recognised throughout the world.

During a visit to see Richard MacPhail (Quality & Maintenance Manager, Altrad Belle) at their manufacturing facility, based in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District, James Lees (UK Sales Manager, Straaltechniek UK) and Jay Dorling (Sales Director, Straaltechniek UK) noticed an old 100ltr Tumbler Shot Blast Machine which was no longer being used, uninstalled and gathering dust and so asked Richard whether it would be of use to them if refurbished and re-commissioned. As various pieces of equipment have smaller components this machine was actually ideal for those parts and quite possibly was used for these in its prime condition.

After Straaltechniek UK carried out a full inspection on the old tumbler shot blast machine an offer was submitted to refurbish the machine, and re-install and Straaltechniek UK were delighted that the offer was accepted and an order was placed by Altrad Belle.

The machine was taken to Straaltechniek UK’s workshop based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and the refurbishment was carried out and prior to inviting Altrad Belle to site to view the machine it was cleaned down and painted to look as good as new. During the site visit Richard and his colleague did not recognise the machine at first due to the transformation during refurbishment and almost walked directly passed the it not realising it was actually their shot blaster!

The machine has since been installed and is now in full use on site at Altrad Belle and 2 of the maintenance team expressed their delight with the refurbished shot blast tumbler machine by posing for a few photo’s and demonstrated to Straaltechniek UK how well the machine is performing by running a few cycles and showing the finished parts after shot blasting.

James Lees, UK Sales Manager at Straaltechniek UK said “this has been one of my favourite refurbishment jobs we have done, to see the before, during and after pictures displays the fantastic work our team has done on refurbishing this old boy and during my recent site visit to see Richard and his colleagues it was clear to see they were very happy with the machine which gives me great satisfaction on being involved in a project such as this one. The machine looks fantastic in the new area Altrad Belle have allocated for it and is doing a brilliant job”
